Solid-state transformers – the electronics‑based challenger – look additive rather than disruptive on current evidence: they cost an estimated 5‑10 times more per unit, lack an industry qualification standard, and use different core materials, so they don’t even relieve the specialized‑steel bottleneck. I watch them win new high‑density datacenter sockets while the iron‑core grid base remains my domain.
